The biggest cities in the United States are New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, but what about all of the other big ones? While most Americans are familiar with the first two, the rest of the cities on this list aren’t so easily recognizable. In 1950, Detroit ranked fourth, but by the latest estimates, it was the twenty-third most populous city in the country.

While the number of residents in these cities has fluctuated throughout history, recent census data has shown that Houston has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Houston’s population of 2.3 million people speaks more than 90 languages. Phoenix saw the largest population increase in the last decade, moving from number six in 2010 to five in 2020.
Los Angeles is the host of the Summer Olympics three times by 2028. It was also the site of the Summer Olympic Games in 1984 and 1932. Another major economic driver, Chicago is one of the country’s biggest cities. Home prices in Chicago are affordable despite its cosmopolitan nature. Housing in the city can cost over $850k, but it’s not impossible to find a home at this price. You’ll find plenty of work in the city and the median cost of a home is just under $700k.
